An Approach to Detect Dolphin Whistle from Underwater Sounds
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper handles the issue of identifying the whistle of a dolphin in the presence of noise. When a recorded underwater signal containing other sounds is given to a system, it detects and identifies the presence of dolphin whistle. Analyzing the extracted underwater sounds gives meaningful information about the environment. Also, the presence of a particular underwater species and their behavior can be identified from the sounds emitted by them. Dolphins make distinctive calls. This can be analyzed in the post processing stage. Features like Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients are extracted for the detection of dolphin whistle. Here, the classifier Gaussian Mixture Model is used to classify the recordings based on features to identify the presence of dolphin whistle. A complete simulation is done on the recorded underwater signals to detect the presence of dolphin. Index Terms — Underwater, Detection, GMM, Dolphin Whistle —————————— ——————————

Recognition of Frequency Modulated Whistle-Like Sounds by a Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and Humans with Transformations in Amplitude, Duration and Frequency
Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) use the frequency contour of whistles produced by conspecifics for individual recognition. Here we tested a bottlenose dolphin's (Tursiops truncatus) ability to recognize frequency modulated whistle-like sounds using a three alternative matching-to-sample paradigm. The dolphin was first trained to select a specific object (object A) in response to a spec...
متن کاملVocalizations in social interactions among captive dolphins
In order to understand the role of vocalization in dolphin social interactions, we need to know which animals are engaged with which other animals, what activity they are engaged in, and which animals are vocalizing. In this poster we describe our efforts to address the linked problems of identifying individual animals and identifying which animal produced which sounds. Solving these problems i...
متن کاملA Comparison of Bottlenose Dolphin Whistles in the Atlantic Ocean: Factors Promoting Whistle Variation
Whistles are narrowband, frequency-modulated sounds produced by many cetaceans. Whistles are extensively studied in delphinids, where several factors have been proposed to explain betweenand within-species variation. We examined factors associated with geographic variation in whistles of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) by assessing the role of ambient noise, noise from boats, an...
متن کاملDifferences in the whistle characteristics and repertoire of Bottlenose and Spinner Dolphins.
Several methods have been used to compare the whistles produced by dolphins. The two methods used in this study are: (1) a classification of whistle contours in six categories (i.e. constant frequency, upsweep, downsweep, concave, convex, and sine) and (2) the extraction of frequency and time parameters from each whistle contour. Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus whistles are described in t...
متن کاملThe Effect of Dolphin Watching Boat Noise Levels on the Whistle Acoustic Structure of Dolphins in Bocas Del Toro, Panama
The resident bottlenose dolphin community at Dolphin Bay in Bocas del Toro sustains the largest dolphin watching (DW) industry in Panama. Our previous work shows that dolphins significantly respond to DW boat presence by modifying their whistle frequency and duration particularly when engaged in foraging activities. The usual assumption is that the noise associated with the DW boats is responsi...
